Alguns contam que no local onde hoje está localizado o município de Bagé, no Rio Grande do Sul, viveu um cacique minuano de nome Ibajé. Segundo contam, o índio estaria enterrado no centro de Bagé, e do seu nome se originou o nome do município. Porém, nunca foi realmente comprada a existência desse índio, o mais provável é que essa historia seja, na verdade, uma lenda.
Uma outra hipótese, que é a mais aceita, diz que o nome do município de Bagé é oriundo da linguagem indígena, e está relacionado com a idéia de “cerros”.
Os cerros eram chamados de “mbaiê” pelos índios tapes. A expressão mais aceita é “bag” que também é uma expressão indígena e também significa “cerros”.
